Volunteer Opportunities

CES operates under a very large volunteer base, and has been very intentional in the way programs and staff have been established.  In order to preserve more funds for those in crisis need, administrative costs have been kept to a minimum.  Therefore, many of the tasks at CES are done by volunteers.

This past year, there were almost 500 volunteers who donated their time in many different areas of CES and its different programs.   There are those who participate weekly and those who come with a group to join in a one-time special project.  Each is important.

Below is a synopsis of the volunteer opportunities available.  For a more thorough list please see Specific Volunteer Openings.

Volunteer Prayer partners are greatly valued, especially as they pray for the resources required to meet the daily needs in the inner city as well as specific requests given to CES by clients and donors.

Interviewers: (once a week, weekday afternoons)

Interviewers are needed in the afternoons to meet with clients on a one-on-one basis.  The goal is to assess the physical and spiritual interests of the individual while also being alert to any underlying causes that might have brought the person to a point of coming here for help.

Mailing Team: (usually the 3rd Wednesday morning of each month)

Volunteers spend half of a day preparing our newsletter for bulk mailing.

Van Driver/Driver Assistant:

Drivers are needed to pick up and deliver food, as well as occasional clothing, furniture and household goods. The ability to lift some heavy boxes is required.

Grocery Sorter/Stocker:  (mostly mornings, some afternoons)

The CES Food Shelf Manager needs ongoing help with grocery processing.  This involves weighing the donated groceries, recording the pounds of incoming food, sorting by type, putting food in the proper food storage areas and restocking the pantry.  The ability to lift heavy boxes is important, but not absolutely necessary.

Maintenance:   (as needed basis)

As with all old buildings, there are always issues to attend to.  Help with minor repair work, general carpentry, plumbing, painting and electrical duties is very appreciated.  Please call for specifics.

Custodial: (mornings or afternoons)

Although a custodian on duty, there are extra custodial needs.  Please call for a current list and/or suggestions as to your capabilities.

Office: (mornings or afternoons)

There are many organizational opportunities available in the office, such as filing, and/or creating filing systems, sorting, copying, processing small mailings and other general duties.

Meals on Wheels: (M – F, once a week/month, mid-day)

Volunteer drivers (must provide their own car) are needed to deliver meals to home-bound clients, primarily senior citizens.
