Community Emergency Service (CES) Meals On Wheels is an important solution to both long and short term emergency situations facing many people in our community. It is designed to prepare and deliver a hot, nutritious noon meal—Monday through Friday—to homebound seniors and, in a few cases, disabled non-seniors who are unable to manage their own meal preparation. Volunteers do the bulk of the meal deliveries to homes. The goal of Meals On Wheels is to provide nutritious, low-cost meals to homebound seniors and opportunities for relationships to develop. With 13-15 delivery routes each day, many volunteers are needed to ensure that every senior on every route receives their meal. There are usually about ten deliveries per route, taking about an hour to complete. Volunteers can do one route per week or even one route per month, if they prefer. Many find fulfillment as they deliver meals and, in a way, have a part in the rescue of senior citizens and others who often live in swamps of loneliness and limited ability. If you are interested in helping MOW by volunteering, give us a call at (612)870-6121. We would be happy to get you started. A Year of ThankfulnessAs we pull together the year end numbers for Meals on Wheels, I am filled with thankfulness for many things. Thankful for the 313 clients we served this year. Thankful for their unique personalities that bring different flavors to our program, some spicier than others! Thankful for the nearly 62,000 meals served to these clients. Thankful for our dedicated staff of seven and the faithful pool of over 400 volunteers who made sure those meals made it to our clients. Thankful for the nearly $12,000.00 given by companies and individuals to cover the costs of meals for clients who could not afford them. Most of all, I am thankful for our Creator and His Son who gave us the example of serving rather than being served. All of this gives hope for another great year of service at Meals on Wheels (MOW) in 2010. We look forward to seeing more clients served, more volunteers becoming involved in serving and look forward to seeing what God will do through MOW this year! by Mat Nix, CES Meals on Wheels Coordinator Greatest Need While
delivering meals in a high rise apartment building, I reached one of my
delivery destinations. A walker was out of place on the floor in the hall. Upon
hearing the man groan, I asked if he was OK. No answer. Although the door was
unlocked, he had fallen behind the door keeping me from opening it easily.
Forcing my way in, I saw blood on the floor and on the bathroom door frame. He
was not coherent. After calling 911and MOW’s, I waited with him until the
paramedics treated him. A couple days
later, a personal call came from his grandchild stating, “If you had not been
there and called when you did, in just minutes, he would have died. Thank you!”
At the time of the call, the grandfather was in ICU and was expected to recover.
Meals on Wheels is often more than delivering nutritious meals; it means being
there during someone’s greatest need, just as this family reiterated several times. by Bob Nepple, CES Meals on Wheels Driver Widows Accepted “Religion
that is pure & undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans
& widows in their affliction.“ James
1:27
Every day, our MOW volunteers visit orphans and widows, providing them a nutritious meal. Sometimes the volunteer is able to establish a relationship with a client that goes beyond the daily visit and nutritional support. Dan, a regular volunteer, established a relationship with Maxine, a client who was often alone and had little family involvement. Dan’s family adopted Maxine into their family as “Grandma.” They often would take Maxine out to do special things such as driving through neighborhoods looking at Christmas lights or visiting the Holidazzle parade. Maxine has since passed away but Dan continues to be a faithful volunteer. All of our Meals on Wheels volunteers are ministering to our clients in very helpful ways.
